Paradise lost: Remembering the famous Rehoboth men’s guest house

What hath night to accomplish with sleep?” John Milton, A Journey to Paradise

In February 1987, 30-something Bill Courville was at his Mt. Pleasant neighborhood dwelling. He opened the fresh edition of the Washington Blade. As usual, he read it from commencement to end. With a Ph.D. in psychology, Bill enjoyed the classifieds. It lifted his spirits after reading obituaries of same-sex attracted men and news of meager AIDS funding from the Reagan administration. Sandwiched between personals and escorts were real estate sales listings, including a one-inch ad about a B&B in downtown Rehoboth Beach, Del.

Bill thought about his youthful days living in New Orleans and active at the Maison De Ville, a small dusty red stucco painted guest house overlooking Toulouse Avenue. There Tennessee Williams had once lived while penning “A Street Car Named Desire”when not sipping Sazarac cocktails in the garden courtyard.

He circled the ad and placed it on the kitchen counter for his boyfriend, Bob, to read. The couple had met two years earlier crossing the P Street Bridge and had gradually merged their lives. After Bob looked at the ad, Bill

Bed and Breakfast with Garden and Notorious History

Last week I visited my beach home-away-from home – the Rehoboth Guest House in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. I try to go every spring and fall for the best weather and rates, and more tolerable crowds crowds. This B&B is stylish and charming inside but the exterior is best of all, the front being a destination in October when it sports the most outrageous Halloween decorations in town.

Like these guests, I love the front porch for hanging out and greeting people on their walk down Maryland  Way to the beach.

I adore the back garden even with no blooms yet. Those red maples with the yellow umbrellas are perfect with the grey and white of the building.

In the before-and-after above (from its Facebook page) yellow was in the original but everything else has changed for the better.

From the balcony.

When I visited in mid-May the annuals had just been planted, due to our unusually cold spring.

I want a B&B that has great outdoor spaces to hang out and this one has many to choose from. The upper d

Homestead B&B at Rehoboth

The Homestead Bed & Breakfast at Rehoboth Beach is a Rehoboth Beach same-sex attracted B&B just three miles from town on two beautifully landscaped acres.

We're pet friendly and adults-only.

You can choose from four nicely decorated rooms in the main house, each with a confidential bathroom, or our large 800 square foot private cottage with a vast fenced-in backyard.

The Homestead Bed & Breakfast started out as a small farmhouse in 1899 - part of a two-hundred acre active farm. Today, our Rehoboth Beach inn is decorated with relaxing beach themes and reminders of its previous role - beautiful hardwood floors, cozy fireplaces and the charm of yesteryear.

Our guests will enjoy a full breakfast in our dining room:

* Hot entree of the day
* Homemade bread
* Fresh fruit and yogurt
* Gourmet coffee
* Additional continental fare

We are proud of our delicious breakfasts, and use local or home-grown ingredients whenever possible. Our guests call our breakfast "top-notch" and "above restaurant quality".

We also serve complimentary breakfast cocktails on Sunday morning all year, including our signature Bloody Mary made with our h
