Julien Pontes, president of the LGBT rights organisation Paris Foot Gay (PFG), was the victim of a homophobic ambush over the weekend, when he and his partner were entering their house in the 11th district of Paris.
The attack took place on Sunday morning (26 July), just before 01:00 am, when the couple denied three youngsters a cigarette. The couple was verbally and physically abused and the insults - Julien explained - were mostly of homophobic nature.
"I was coming abode with my husband and as I finished my cigarette three youngsters came towards us and asked me for one. Their tone was a bit aggressive, one of them was walking with an oppose on his hand and you could feel some tension." Julien explained in an interview.
"I refused to give them a cigarette and that it is how it started. My husband managed to escape into the house but was followed by one of the aggressors, while I was held by the head and repeatedly beaten.
"The is an incident that did not objective me as president of PFG, but as an individual, and reflects a dangerous way in which society looks at LGBT people."
Julien was treated at the Saint-Antoine hospital, where medical certificates confirmed the attacked
The Dutch FA have been congratulated by campaigners for launching an action intend to tackle homophobia and to celebrate the involvement of the LGBT group in football.
On 11 October EGLSF and EPAS hosted United Against Homophobia in Sports conference in Utrecht, Netherlands. Conference speakers included the Dutch Minister for Health and Sport, and the Deputy Minister of Social Affairs and Identical Opportunities of Albania.
The President of the KNVB (the Dutch FA) Michael van Praag presented an deed plan for tackling homophobia in football under the title “Football for all” .
The plan featured a 30-second spot called 'Gay? It doesn't matter' depicting a football team with one of its players literally in a wooden closet. He warms up, plays, and even showers in his self-imposed box. "Why aren't you coming out of the closet? Your team is ready for you" the caption at the end of the ad reads.
