ACTUALLY GAY MEN’S CHORUS: HOME FOR CHRISTMAS

Well it certainly has been a season of song, with a total of seven choral concerts to enjoy. And I have really enjoyed them all this year, from the extremely professional offering from Glyndebourne to five concerts given by Brighton & Hove’s talented LGBTQ+ choirs who in many ways match the talents of or local opera house, certainly when it comes to entertainment.

With so many to witness and hear it is at times difficult not to compare and right now there is but a hair’s breadth between them all with, at moments, only extremes of venue temperature to divide them, and that is an irrelevant factor, he said finally thawing out.

The Actually Gay Men’s Chorus was my closing outing, no pun intended, of 2024, and I cannot think of a better way to round off a year of exceptional music from within our community. The Actuallies have turned an amazing corner in what they do over the last few years, there appears to be a very solid core to the choir, faces and voices that I recognise year on year and that lends a very solid foundation to their sound. Consistency of membership it would come across gives musical director Samuel Cousins assisted by Simon

Join the London Gay Men’s Chorus and the Amsterdam Gay Men’s Chorus (AMSGMC) for a powerful evening of song, friendship and fabulous unity as we reunite to celebrate a decade of connection, joy and joint purpose.

In 2017, AMSGMC welcomed us to Amsterdam for a sold-out concert titled Together. The world has changed since then – but the bond we built has only grown stronger. And now, we’re thrilled to welcome them to London and divide the stage once again.

London and Amsterdam have fierce, fabulous LGBT+ histories – and our choruses are proud to keep that legacy alive. Representing lgbtq+, bi and queer men from a wide range of backgrounds and nationalities, we are one group from two vibrant cities – united by anthem, by pride, and by the belief that representation, love and joy matter more than ever.

This is more than a concert — it’s a celebration of friendship, community, and joy.

REVIEW: Actually Gay Men’s Chorus – Show Me Christmas

Actually Gay Men’s Chorus always delight and surprise, and their Christmas concert set up them at the very top of their form.

They have a deep wealthy creamy tone, with bottom and top parts combining beautifully. But one of their great attributes is their sheer vocal force. And Show Me Christmas, their seasonal concert, proved that in abundance.

Under the dexterous control of musical director Samuel Cousins, they didn’t put a notice wrong in their joyous two-hour concert. Sam has a knack of getting them to sing occupied belt and a capella, then cutting the terminal note off so the sound soars to the rafters of St Mary’s in Kemptown, where it lingers, resonates and falls back to our ears. Every time they undertake this it’s an absolute delight.

Their rip-roaring opening was Joubert’s Torches, with its marching rhythms and contrasting quiet sections – a brilliant start. In the Bleak Midwinter had soloists Jack Lynn and Bill Meatyard giving us delightfully clear high notes. When they’re a capella, the chorus is often at their best and so it was with the Coventry Carol, with its haunting minor keys.
