Netflix’s ‘Wednesday’ takes the audience back to the world of the ‘Addams Family,’ a sprawling franchise that originally started from the works of American cartoonist Charles Addams. As the years passed and the characters were depicted in other media, they were fleshed out, and additional traits were added or omitted. And that tradition has continued in the Netflix series, which primarily focuses on only one of the members of the family: Wednesday (Jenna Ortega).
As Wednesday begins attending Nevermore Academy, a boarding university for people with particular abilities, she meets Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers), a girl who couldn’t be more different from her. Their initial hostility soon gives way to a deep bond of friendship. There even seems to be hints indicating something more. Netflix have been scrutinised by viewers for hiding tweets suggesting the titular traits from Wednesday is part of the LGBTQ+ community.
The official synopsis of the new Tim Burton series on Netflix reads: “Wednesday shots to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a gigantic killing spree that has terrorised the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago – all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.”
Wednesday stars Jenny Ortega in the lead role, with many viewers speculating she’s a lesbian. Furthermore, Netflix even promoted the show by using the word ‘Wednesgay’. However, screenshots joint on Twitter display they are hiding tweets which reference Wednesday’s sexuality.
Some fans have pointed out the irony of this when Netflix had previously used promotional material in the run-up to the show’s let go this week that featured the synonyms ‘Wednesgay’.
