List of books with lgbtq characters

Because disabled, chronically ill, and/or neurodivergent lgbtq+ rep is so rare, I’ve included “Additional books of note,” which are books by disabled and/or neurodivergent gender non-conforming authors which highlight both major queer/trans characters and disabled and/or neurodivergent characters, although queerness and disability/neurodivergence do not intersect in a single character.

Today on the site I’m delighted to welcome Emilie Nantel to reveal the cover of her upcoming speculative bi f/f YA, Load Game, releasing September 18, 2025! Here’s the story:

Vera Young can time commute through her selfies.

For a disaster bi with a huge crush on her bestie Soph and an affinity for trouble, that new power is a cheat code for experience. Consequences are a thing of the past.

Punched the sleazy quarterback and got suspended? Save game. Load game. Get out scot-free.

Want the satisfaction of getting revenge on the imply girls bullying you, but still want to be a good person? Humiliate them in front of everyone, rewind, and enjoy! It doesn’t count if it didn’t happen!

Whatever experience throws at her, Vera’s got this.

But some things you can’t control, not even with all the time travel in the world: Riverview High’s rumor mill; a death that’s a fixed point in time; and the crumbling integrity of the space-time continuum, to name a few.

Turns out, there’s a lot of consequences to a no-consequences life.

For teen readers at an age of firsts of all kinds, where mistakes, what-ifs, grief and guilt are so challenging to cope with. Load Game deals with the hardship

I haven’t done a top ten in a while, so I figured it was period. I usually endeavor to read more LGBTQ+ books during Pride Month, but since I got off to a slow start and didn’t post anything for basically the first half of the month, I figured I’d overcompensate with an extra-long list that includes both books that I’ve loved for years and some that I’ve just discovered recently.

Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdomby Leigh Bardugo

Genre: YA Fantasy

Queer Representation: Of the main characters, two are double attraction and one is gay. There is one major m/m romance and one additional minor gay character. In the sequel series, there is a gender non-conforming relationship between a bisexual woman and a trans male (note: he does not come out until near the end–to anyone, including himself– and therefore presents as female and uses she/her pronouns until then).

Brief Review: Six of Crows has instantly become one of my all-time favorite books. It’s basically Ocean’s Eleven with actually amazing characters dumped into a uniquely inspired fantasy setting. There are few novels with a core cast of characters who complement each other as well as

Top Ten Tuesday is an authentic feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. The feature was created because The Broke and Bookish are particularly fond of lists (as are we!). Each week a new Top Ten list topic is given and bloggers can participate.

Today’s Topic: Books that Feature LGBTQ Characters or Issues

When this week’s topic popped up about celebrating diversity, we knew that we wanted to celebrate books with LGBTQ characters or issues (particularly in light of the SCOTUS same-sex marriage ruling). Below are 10 books we’ve read that we feel are wonderful representations of middle grade and young adult literature that include LGBTQ characters or issues. They are listed in no particular command, and to be straightforward , we had a firm time narrowing the list to ten!

1. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

A pretty, quiet book that is very literary, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe follows Aristotle, a boy who doesn’t have friends until he meets Dante. Through Dante, he learns about friendship, life, and loyalty.

2. Ask the Passengers by A.S.
