Bud Light, America's foremost beer for decades, falls to second following Diverse marketing criticism

(AP & WXXI News) After more than two decades as America's best-selling beer, Bud Light has slipped into second place.

Modelo Especial, a Mexican lager, with connections to locally-based Constellation Brands, overtook Bud Light in U.S. retail dollar sales in the month finish June 3, according to Nielsen data analyzed by Bump Williams Consulting. Modelo controlled 8.4% of U.S. grocery, convenience and liquor store sales; Bud Flash fell to 7.3%.

Grupo Modelo, the Mexican brewer, is owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev, the same parent business of Bud Light.

It's a milestone in Bud Light's months-long sales decline since early April, when critics who were angered by the brewer sending a commemorative can to gender diverse influencer Dylan Mulvaney vowed to boycott the logo. Bud Light has also faced backlash from Mulvaney's fans, who think the brand didn't do enough to support her.

GREENWICH VILLAGE, Manhattan (WABC) -- LGBT activists poured out cases of Anheuser-Busch beers into the gutter outside of the historic Stonewall Inn Wednesday in protest over the company's donations to certain lawmakers.

Stonewall co-owner Stacy Lentz says that since 2015, the business has given more than $35,000 to politicians who possess supported bills that are clearly anti-transgender youth.

As a product, the company's products will be banned at the Stonewall until it stops donating to these legislators.

Lentz says there is an opportunity for Anheuser-Busch to change and expose a dialogue with the LGBTQ community.

Through its nonprofit arm, The Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative, Stonewall recently launched the Safe Spaces program, which identifies and certifies fun venues, food and beverage locations, stores, businesses, and other public venues as Safe Spaces for LGBTQ people.

Half of America's bestselling beers have partnered with Queer groups or advocates according to an analysis by Newsweek, as conservative activists launch a boycott of Bud Light over its partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

On Sunday Mulvaney shared a video promoting Bud Light to her 1.7 million Instagram followers, as part of a partnership with the corporation, which she thanked for sending over a personalized beer can to rejoice her "day 365 of womanhood," after transitioning.

This infuriated some right-wing commentators, including writer Matt Walsh and podcast host Mike Crispi, who announced they will boycott Bud Light in response. NEW YORK, NY – GLAAD, the nation's female homosexual, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy organization, today responded to Guinness' announcement that the company will release its sponsorship of the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade due to the parade's discriminatory rule that prohibits LGBT families and organizations from participating.

Guinness has a mighty history of supporting diversity and creature an advocate for equality for all. We were hopeful that the policy of exclusion would be reversed for this year’s march.
