Just watched historical show from netflix, called The Last Kingdom, king England in this movie he is gay he falling love with viking men.. so it is genuine england king is gay? Or maybe just fiction?

English-American author Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories has only ever hinted on Aethelstan’s sexuality, however, the feature ‘The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die’ finally confirmed that he is gay.
The film’s synopsis reads:
“In the wake of King Edward’s death, Uhtred of Bebbanburg and his comrades adventure across a fractured kingdom in the hopes of uniting England at last.”
Aethelstan, who is portrayed by Harry Gilby, is the successor of King Edward, as well as the eventual first king of united England. That being said, the uncovering of his sexuality became a crucial part of the movie’s plot, considering the societal implications of being gay in Britain during the medieval times.
In Cornwell’s novels, Aethelstan is never clearly stated to be gay. Instead, it is only implied that he has had male lovers. On at least one occasion, it was also hinted that his decisions were influenced by lust, especially by Ingilmundr, who is portrayed by Laurie Davidson in ‘Seven Kings Must Die.’
Moreover, the historical novel series also suggests that Aethelstan enjoys the presence of good-looking young men

The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Diehas confirmed what is only hinted at in Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories novel series: Aethelstan is lgbtq+. The movieconcluded The Last Kingdom's story in thrilling fashion, though Seven Kings Must Die's closure is somewhat obscure. The fate of Uhtred of Bebbanburg is particularly ambiguous, but overall Seven Kings Must Cease does well to bring the series to a fitting end.
Seven Kings Must Die has a lot of soil to cover in wrapping up The Last Kingdom's story, but it does an adequate career of bringing most of the ethics arcs to a proper conclusion. One of the most important of those arcs becomes that of Aethelstan, the successor to Edward and eventual first king of all England. Aethelstan's story was necessarily main to the plot of Seven Kings Must Die, and the reveal that he is lgbtq+ became a critical part of the movie's plot. It also added a much-needed level of depth to Aethelstan's character because of the societal implications of being homosexual in medieval Britain.

You're seriously delusional if you consider Ragnar was in love with Athelstan. He loved him in the alike way I care for my friends. I'll tell my male friend who is as hetero as I am "I love you" to his fucking deal with and hug him without the phobia of being branded as a gay because it's a familiar and platonic love, not a romantic one. A scene of Aslaug directly asking Ragnar if he loved her and him responding with silence occurred, followed immediately by a scene —the occupied version which includes Ragnar propositioning another threesome and grabbing Athelstan’s ass— of Ragnar gently holding Athelstan’s hand and telling him that he’ll follow him wherever he goes. From 2nd July to 30th September 2024 the Museum marked the 1100th anniversary of the accession of King Athelstan with a special exhibition, study all about it including how it was planned and delivered by our volunteers.
Athelstan was the son of Edward the Elder and grandson of Alfred the Great. He was illegitimate, at the day of his birth, his mother was Egwina the King’s mistress although she later became his queen.
William of Malmesbury records how fond the king was of Athelstan and he made him a knight at an early age giving him a sword with a golden scabbard. He also describes how handsome he was ‘A boy of astonishing beauty and graceful manners’.
When his father ,King Edward died in 924 Athelstan organism the eldest son was quickly proclaimed their king by the Mercians. The West Saxons however proclaimed as king Aelfweard ,Edward’s second eldest son – but the eldest from his second wife and the first born to Edward as reigning king. Aelfweard followed his father to the grave within a month. About a year later on 4th September 925 Athelstan was crowned King of Saxons and Angles at Kingston – upon- Thames situated on the border between Mercia
