First same-sex weddings get place in Scotland

Tom French, from the Equality Network help - which campaigns for the rights of Scotland's homosexual woman, gay, bisexual, trans person and intersex (LGBTI) communities - said: "It was an honour to be invited to one of Scotland's first same-sex weddings, which really showed what this new statute is all about - love, family and equality.

"This is a giant day for many couples and their families, but it is also a milestone moment for Scotland as a whole."

Tourism body VisitScotland and charity Stonewall Scotland welcomed the first same-sex weddings.

VisitScotland said the modern law would further promote Scotland as a friendly tourist destination for the LGBTI communities, and could enhance the country's already burgeoning market for marriage tourism.

Colin Macfarlane, director of Stonewall Scotland, said: "This historic change in the law is the result of a tireless campaign by many organisations, including Stonewall Scotland, parliamentarians and individuals to ensure that queer couples can love full equality before the law.

Joe Schofield and Malcolm Brown, who survive in Tullibody, celebrated the change in legislation which allows them to wedding by saying “I do” at the stroke of midnight on Hogmanay.


Malcolm, famous as Malx to his friends, told the Observer: “I was quietly confident that one day we’d be able to receive married.


“Civil partnerships were a step in the right direction - but they were still only for gay couples. It wasn’t equality and didn’t look right for us. This marriage is for us, but it’s also for everyone who’s campaigned tirelessly to get equal rights for same sex couples.”


Joe added: “To be qualified to introduce Malx as my husband is all I ever wanted. We’re so happy the daytime is finally here.”

The ceremony began late on Tuesday night in the Trades Hall, Glasgow, leading up to them being pronounced husband and husband in the first minutes of Wednesday, December 31.

An openly gay vicar faces disciplinary action after taking part in a civil partnership ceremony with another man.

The Rev Christopher Wardale, 59, from Darlington, and retired Northumbria University lecturer Malcolm Macourt, 58, exchanged vows in Newcastle.

A service of celebration was held at a city church, where the former Bishop of Durham, Rev David Jenkins, preached.
