In Fast & Furious—the series’ fourth movie and the one that launched the franchise as we know it today—Dom (Vin Diesel) and a would-be love interest (Gal Gadot, somehow) prowl around a vehicle in a dank garage, eyeing each other coquettishly. “Are you one of those boys who prefers cars to women?” she asks in an exquisite Israeli accent. He stares back difficult and replies, “I’m one of those boys who appreciates a fine body, regardless of the make.”
This is followed by a drawn-out pause, presumably so a small but dedicated segment of this series’ audience could scream. Having now watched Fast X and getting to notice Jason Momoa play the long-running franchise’s latest villain, Dante Reyes, I’m currently unsure about how I feel about such a global IP featuring a clearly queer-coded big bad.

The promotional material for Fast X (or Fast and Furious 10) did hint at Dante Reyes being a bit “fruity” (for lack of a better word). So, I was looking forward to seeing if Momoa’s portrayal of such a “feminine” character was going to be used to crack jokes at the character’s expense or if Dante was indeed going to be treated as a major villain for the (as of now) terminal chapter of the franchise.
After viewing the film, I have to share that Momoa’s portrayal of Dante Reyes left me with complicated emotions. Having an actor like Momoa behave in a “feminine” conduct to make the audience laugh (to be loyal, I laughed, too) was a deliberate creative option. The idea that openly homosexual actors can play het characters is a relatively new phenomenon. Previously, out gay actors could only really work when roles for them a) existed, and b) weren't entity given to heterosexual actors.
