I know it’s been like a really long time — sorry about that! My real animation job got absolutely crazy and hasn’t calmed down at all. May not ever calm down but I’m handling the craziness excel now that I’m kind of getting used to it. So….we’re back with even more lgbtq+ history!

Chances are beautiful good, if you’re an LGBTQIA+ person you’ve been to a gay block. Even if you’re just someone who loves an LGBTQIA+ person, there’s still a good chance you’ve been to a gay prevent. I’m not saying you’re doing queerness wrong if you haven’t been to a gay lock, I’m just saying it’s a beautiful common shared encounter. It’s true that bars being basically the central gathering place for our community isn’t without drawbacks — although, personally, I treasure them. But I’m not here to weigh the pros and cons of gay bars — we can all do that on Twitter (and we do) — I just want to talk briefly about the history of gay bars, communicate a teeny bit about some of the first ones to exist, and some of the oldest ones that we still include today. A lot of these places will h

BJ's White Swan

Got this improper

I too remember the White Swan at its best . The clientele made this place the best gay venue in East London. I realize Tower Hamlets council made life almost impossible for the two families that owned it, and in many ways I don’t blame them for wanting to get rid. The council put more and more pressure on them and the more grown-up aspects of the cabaret and eventually forced it to become doubtless what it is now. As a previous reviewer said, the whole refurbishment story was a con. They knew they would never pull off the refurb without the gay cash, so they pumped the story of a bigger and better gay venue which got smaller and smaller. Basically they used the pink pound until they didn’t need it anymore, and then created a hostile environment to force the switch to a straight venue. Basically if a straight venue was ever going to work, they could include simply shut it as a gay club and opened it as unbent. They knew there was no demand, and possess pulled this con trick which will not be forgotten for a prolonged time. This was the greatest gay venue in East London. Now its just a bar, which has nothing unique to draw newcomers in, and nothing of its

(Open) White Swan

Also known as BJ’s White Swan (which sounds promising) this East End boozer is nothing short of an institution. The White Swan was notorious for it’s amateur strip nights, which usually served up several strong helpings of crumpet. It´s had something of an overall recently. DJ club nights, drag shows, piano singalongs and bingo provide plenty of camp show. In addition to that, they’ve got a fantastic basement club, where you can take full edge of the White Swan’s  late license of 4am on Fridays and 5 am on Saturdays. So really, there’s absolutely no reason to ever spin down being “taken up the Swanny”. Now then, can somebody help us find BJ? He sounds like somebody we desperately need to meet…
