Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Non-binary and Queer Rights Committee
The Lesbian, Homosexual, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Rights Committee addresses legal and policy issues in legal institutions and in the court system that affect lesbian, male lover, bisexual, transgender and queer individuals. Our Committee has issued reports in favor of proposals to expand LGBTQ rights, while also conflicting proposals to grow opportunities for discrimination. We joined numerous other City Exclude Committees in supporting the repeal of Civil Rights Rule 50-a, which shielded disclosure of police misconduct records, until it was successfully repealed in June 2020. In preceding 2020, we held an event on intersex rights and put forth a report supporting an education campaign on medically unnecessary surgeries for intersex children, a bill which the City Council passed in April 2021. In addition, we updated and reissued our inform supporting the repeal of New York’s law against loitering for the purposes of prostitution, popularly known as the “Walking While Transitioned Ban” because of its discriminatory impact, primarily on trans women of hue, which the rule was ultimately repealed in February 2021.

LGBTQ Rights
The ACLU has a long history of defending the LGBTQ community. We brought our first LGBTQ rights case in 1936. Founded in 1986, the Jon L. Stryker and Slobodan Randjelović LGBTQ & HIV Project brings more LGBTQ rights cases and advocacy initiatives than any other national organization does and has been counsel in seven of the nine LGBTQ rights cases that the U.S. Supreme Court has decided. With our reach into the courts and legislatures of every state, there is no other organization that can match our tape of making progress both in the courts of law and in the court of public opinion.
The ACLU’s current priorities are to end discrimination, harassment and violence toward transsexual people, to close gaps in our federal and state civil rights laws, to prevent protections against discrimination from being undermined by a license to discriminate, and to guard LGBTQ people in and from the criminal legal system.

Anyone can be a victim of crime, including members of the Homosexual community. LGBTQ+ crime victims have unique challenges and real concerns about reporting crimes. While LGBTQ+ victims of crime share the same identities and concerns as any other crime victim, they also confront additional barriers.
