Trade certificate | 6.2InsightsOn April 27, Statistics Canada released the second put of results from its 2021 census of the Canadian population. This let go focuses on the demographic profile of Canadians—by age, sex, gender, and type of dwelling. Data from the 2021 census will be issued in seven waves over the course of 2022. The next issue will be released on July 23 and comprise information on families, households, marital status; military experience; and income. We are tracking each of these releases to bring you a snapshot of how Alberta is evolving over time. Our last census assessment looked at the generational composition of Canada’s population and broke it down by province. As it is Pride month, today we are looking at sex and, for the first time in Canada, gender. By including a question on gender and a separate question on sex at birth, Canada is the first territory to provide census numbers on transgender and neutrois people. The countryOf Canada’s 30.3 million people aged 15 and older, nearly 60,000 are transgender, and just over 40,000 are neutrois. Together, they comprise 0.33% of this population or about 1 in 300 people. Those who are gender diverse or non-binary disproportionat Statistics Canada recently released socioeconomic data for Canadians, broken down by those who are 2SLGBTQ+ and those who are not. I reflection I’d highlight a few things that stuck out to me. Nearly 1.3 million people in Canada self reported as being 2SLGBTQ+, which accounts for about 4.4% of the population, or about 1 in 20 people. Ontario has the largest number of 2SLGBTQ+ people; although British Columbia has the largest percentage.
Unsurprisingly, the Atlantic provinces have the smallest total number of 2SLGBTQ+ people; however they hold the second largest percentage. Québec actually has the smallest percentage of 2SLGBTQ+ people, despite having the second largest total number. The three Prairie provinces, collectively, include the second smallest total population, but their percentage is in line with the national average. 2SLGBTQ+ people are less likely (22.9%) to be married than their non-2SLGBTQ+ counterparts (56.6%); however, they’re more likely to live in a common-law relationship (22.7% vs. 13.5%).
