NEW LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY CENTER ANNOUNCED IN DC WITH EXPANDED SERVICES IN 2023
The DC Center and the Capital Pride Alliance to Jointly Share Lease
(Washington, D.C.) – The DC Center for the LGBT Community (The DC Center) and the Capital Pride Alliance (CPA) have jointly signed a lease for a unused space located at 1827 Wiltberger St NW, Washington, DC, 20001. The 6,671 square foot space, currently being designed for buildout by Hickok Cole with The DC Center’s specific needs in mind, will include ten offices and multiple co-working stations. Mayor Bowser, through the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, invested $1 million to buildout the recent facility. The new Gay Community Center will excel serve the needs of the community and be complete by mid-2023.
The novel community center will be larger than The DC Center’s current location and will allow an boost in community and service outreach, capacity, and implementation as well as the opportunity to sublease office and desk space to other LGBTQ+ nonprofits. On a sunny spring evening in Washington’s Shaw neighborhood, the once empty Holzbeierlein Bakery warehouse now showcases energy, pride, and the sounds of chosen family coming closer together. After years in a less-than-perfect space on 14th Street, the DC LGBTQ people finally has a new home at the DC LGBTQ Center—and Executive Director Kimberley Bush says it’s more than a building. It’s a promise.
That guarantee, Bush explained to the Washington Blade on April 26—the day of the new LGBTQ Center’s opening—may change depending on who is being uplifted by the DC Center, but at its core remains the same goal: a thriving LGBTQ people in the nation’s capital. The pledge to the DC LGBTQ community is able to expand more connected and stronger, she explained, as more resources, space, and funding become available for the DC Center.

The DC Center provides social and educational opportunities for LGBTQ Seniors, including weekly conversation groups, monthly lunches with programmatic elements, outings, and other community-building opportunities to create a secure space for DC's LGBTQ Older Adults.

Capitol Hill Village LGBTQ Intergenerational Programs
Capitol Hill Village is a non-profit organization serving older adults and their families in Capitol Hill and surrounding neighborhoods who are aging in their community. We serve DC's LGBT older adult residents and LGBT residents of all ages through our LGBTQ programming, which has an intergenerational highlight . We host help groups and a variety of social and educational events throughout the year.

Designed with the organization’s specific needs in thought, the DC Center relocation helps further its mission to educate, empower, honor , and connect the Womxn loving womxn, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer communities. The fresh 6,671-SF space increases their capacity and vital outreach initiatives, with the additional ability to sublease to other LGBTQ+ nonprofits, including Wanda Alston Foundation, Rainbow Families, and G3 Associates.

Supported by a $1 million investment by the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, the new flexible workplace will include ten offices and multiple co-working stations. Much of the design incorporates vetted and green-certified materials to meet and exceed the DC Green Construction and Energy Code’s sustainable standards. The project strives to minimize its environmental footprint while prioritizing the health and wellness of occupants. Additionally, the fresh LGBTQ+ Community Center will go above and beyond ADA requirements to assure inclusivity, accessibility, and comfort for all.
