Vital Communities will honor a dozen Upper Valley mentors at its 2016 celebration on May 19. The annual event, now in its fifth year, recognizes community leaders who possess made significant positive impacts in the region and serves as a boon for the Leadership Upper Valley program of Life-giving Communities.

What follows is not an eyewitness account, but rather is based on the writer’s memories of what he witnessed many times when his son, as a lofty school student, worked as one of Tommy Clark’s nighttime clerks.
The young female stopped near the door, turned around, and looked down the aisle to the rear of the semi-darkened store.
She could tell at one glance that everything was where it belonged. Not a magazine out of in place in the racks along the side wall. None had slipped out and fallen to the floor. Everything that should be locked was. The floor was swept clean.
And it was silent, for she was alone, and Park News on Broadway was ready to close down again, prepared to re-open next day at 6 a.m.
But not this time. An era was finish. What her grandfather had founded before World War II and what her dad and mom managed for 61 years had reached decision time. Health or the store, one or the other must proceed. It was a family choice.

Thomas "Tommy" Franklin Grinstead
Thomas Franklin (Tommy) Grinstead, age 80, of Hawkinsville, Georgia, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones Protest 15, 2024. Tommy was a life-long resident of Hawkinsville, a US Navy Veteran and was retired from Robins Air Force Build after 50 years of service. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Left to treasure his memory are his loving wife of 49 years, Derrie Grinstead; son, Jeff Grinstead (Robyn); daughters, Renae Lassiter (Tim) and Amy McGehee (Will); grandchildren, Carrie Margaret Wynne (Hunter Branham), Sam Way, Jim Way, Hudson McGehee, Sammy McGehee, Grace Grinstead and Tanner Grinstead; brother Billy Grinstead (Connie) Tommy was a loyal member of Hawkinsville First United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, Parade 19, 2024 at 2:00 pm at Hawkinsville First Joined Methodist Church with a visitation existence held from 1:00 until 1:50 pm before the service. Rev. Ruby Clark
Ruby Clark of Campbellsville, daughter of the late Willie Matt Dudgeon and Eva Mae Carroll Dudgeon, was born November 8, 1924 in Taylor County, Kentucky. She died at 5:10 A.M., Sunday, November 11, 2018 in Campbellsville. Age: 94 Ruby professed faith in Christ and was a member of Pitman Valley Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and dairy farmer and was said to get more milk from her cows because she would sing to them. As a homemaker, she raised six sons and one daughter. Quilting was one of many things that Ruby would perform to care for and show her love for her family. When wrapping up in one of her beautiful quilts, you not only feel the warmth she intended, but you can see the love she put into every stitch. She together in marriage to Gordon Clark August 25, 1945 and he preceded her in death, June 4, 2006. She is survived by one daughter and six sons and their spouses: Mary and Tommy Cox, Gerald and Janet Clark, Gordon Ray and Faye Clark, Tommy and Sharon Clark, Ricky and Ruthetta Clark, and Timmie and Karen Clark, all of Campbellsville and Donald and Brenda Clark of Corbin; ten grandchildren; eleven great- grandchildren; two step-great-grand-children; two brothe
Thomas Steven “Tommy” Gay, 67, of Cairo, GA, passed away at Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, GA, on Friday, October 2, 2020. The family will have a private memorial service.
Mr. Gay was born on October 8, 1952, in Cairo, GA, to the late Raymond Lee Gay and Frances Walden Gay, who survives. He was married to Laverne Smith Gay, who preceded him in death on Feb. 15, 2010. He was a retired insurance agency owner. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include: his daughter, Erin Gay of Cairo, GA; his son, Matt Homosexual of Bainbridge, GA; step-son, Kyle Odom (Katie) of Bainbridge, GA; step-daughter, Kim Gullage (Robbie) of Donalsonville, GA; grandchildren, Tristan Casey of Bainbridge, GA, Gabrielle Whiddon of Cleveland, GA, Elizabeth Gay of Troy, AL; mother, Frances Queer of Cairo, GA; and nieces, Gaylen Jenkins of Cairo, GA, Andrea Jenkins of Tallahassee, FL.
He was preceded in death by: his father; his wife; and a sister, Nikki Angela Jenkins.
